David studied at the University of Birmingham , becoming a chartered accountant before working in America. Working in finance, the type of companies Gill has worked for ranges from The BOC Group to Avis Rent A Car System. He served as vice-chairman of the G-14 management committee until the G-14 was disbanded. David then joined Manchester United PLC, one of the biggest football clubs in the world, in 1997 as finance director. In August 2000, he was promoted to deputy chief executive whilst retaining his responsibilities as finance director.
Then in 2005 David was promoted to Chief Executive. In May 2013, David Gill was elected to the UEFA Executive Committee at the 2013 UEFA Congress in London, where 53 member associations voted for candidates to fill eight seats.
